With each project, Rae Sremmurd has grown as artists together and individually. Since their first album Sremmlife the brothers from Mississippi, under Mike Will Made It, have landed platinum records and their own label under the Ear Drummers imprint. Now they are preparing to take their success to another level with their third album SR3MM which will be accompanied by both of their solo albums Swaecation and Jxmtroduction. So let’s take a look back at how the duo have grown over the span of three albums to what I feel is one of the best musical duos of the last decade.
I – SremmLife
Signed by Mike Will Made-It back in 2013 after he finalized his deal with Interscope Records, the brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi became the first artists on Ear Drummers Entertainment. With Mike Will Made-It backing them up with his production the duo quickly found their way onto the radio with their single ‘No Flex Zone’ which gained a lot of viral attention. Building off the steam of ‘No Flex Zone’ the duo went on to release ‘No Type’, which was way more popular than their first single and landed them on charts outside of the U.S. With these two songs, which eventually went platinum, Rae Sremmurd’s Sremmlife debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also contained three more singles, giving them five singles out of their eleven tracks.
II – SremmLife 2
In 2016 Rae Sremmurd released SremmLife 2, the sequel to their first album. The album contained the duo’s biggest song to date in ‘Black Beatles’. ‘Black Beatles’ was the group’s first top Billboard 100 single due to the viral exposure it received for the Mannequin Challenge. Other than the attention from ‘Black Beatles’ the album the album’s other single never caught momentum and the duo began to focus more on their personal projects than promoting the album any more.
III – The Duo’s Solo Efforts
Swae Lee didn’t take too long to get his solo career going as he landed his first top ten song as a solo artist alongside French Montana with ‘Unforgettable’. Along with that single he has been featured on tracks from 2 Chainz, Travis Scott, Jhene Aiko, Big Sean, and Khalid. Swae Lee’s ability to harmonize and be versatile makes him a popular choice to have as a feature.
As for Slim Jxmmi he hasn’t gained much ground as a solo artist with any major features outside of the one with Gucci Mane. He hasn’t shown too much versatility as an artist so it makes it harder for him to be featured on anything other than a party-like hype track.
III – The Triple Album
As the duo began to start preparing to drop their triple album, their buzz single ‘Perplexing Pegasus’’ instrumental landed in several NFL Playoffs and NBA commercials and promotions. The duo went on to release four more singles, which includes their solo singles, leading up to the album’s release. In a recent interview Mike Will Made-It revealed the guest list for SremmLife 3, which includes The Weeknd, Future, Travis Scott, Young Thug, and Pharrell Williams. Plus, actress Zoë Kravitz will also be rapping on the album.
