With his third studio album ASTROWORLD, Travis has given us some of his best music to date. It just seems like all the experimental things he’s been doing over the last two albums have finally paid off and now we are receiving the fruits of his labor.  On the album, Travis showcased his production and curation skills as he has put together some of the industry’s biggest names in hip-hop to help create this album. The album also served as a tribute to his hometown of Houston.

A Tribute to Houston

While preparing for the release of Astroworld, Travis has been very vocal about the importance of AstroWorld in his childhood and that the album was to be an ode to Houston and it’s just that.

Filled with nods and name drops of current and late great Houston artists Travis paid homage to those who paved the way for him to become the artist he is today.   He also showed love to his city with tracks titled “R.I.P. Screw”, “5% Tint”, and “Houstonfornication.  It’s clear that AstroWorld is a tribute to Houston’s rap community.

ASTROWORLD’s Production

One of the greatest things about the album is its production. The album contained tracks with an amazing array of layered sounds and samples that honors some of hip-hop greatest artists. On “RIP DJ Screw” a sample from a DJ Screw interview was used.   A cut from The Beastie Boys “The New Style” was used in “Carousel” and the intro to Biggie’s Gimmie the Loot” was used in “Sicko Mode”.  These are just a few of the samples used on the star-studded project.

Album Features

When it comes to features AstroWorld was jam-packed with them. The album was literally an amusement park filled with exciting sounds and themes contributed from its contributors. There were so many features that “Watch”a track which features Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert, didn’t make the cut. The features that did make the album were from Frank Ocean, Drake, Swae Lee, Sheck Wes, Kid Cudi, 21 Savage, Takeoff, Quavo, Gunna, and Juice World. On the production side featuring Hit-Boy, WondaGurl, Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, Murda Beatz, Cardo, Sevn Thomas, Nineteen85, Sonny Digital, Stevie Wonder, Impala, John Mayer, and Tay Keith help collaborate the sounds on the album.

Overall, this is definitely my favorite album of the year so far. Travis Scott definitely puts together an album in which I believe is an instant classic which put him on more people’s musical radar. With top-notch production and a ton of features, this album does remind me of a roller coaster ride with different turns and feels as you make your way through the album. I also believe that with this album he musically takes the space that Kanye should have filled with his musical style and production.  In the in AstroWorld is phenomenal and deserves the hype it was given before its release and will be a staple in Travis’ career.
