The-Dream was a mastermind in the studio in the 2000s and a writer who has written countless hits. He has written records for Mariah Carey, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. He has also penned and produced some memorable tracks for himself. With his signature “eh” adlib, it wasn’t hard to figure out his lyrics across the industry. So let’s take at one of the greatest writers in the last couple of decades, The-Dream.

The Beginning

The-Dream’s career started with penning one of my favorite B2K songs “Everything” off of their Pandemonium! After the success of that song he acquired a publishing deal and began working on Nivea’s second album Complicated. The album took him two years to finish. Afterward, he continued to work with Tricky Stewart which led to putting together “Umbrella” for Rihanna.

Solo Career

Even though at this point of his career his stock as a writer is up high, The-Dream saved some of his best songs for himself as he prepares to release  Love Hate on Def Jam Records. The album featured “I Luv Your Girl” , “Shawty Is a 10”, and “Falsetto”. Love Hate was the first of his Love trilogy and his most memorable album among listeners.

The Writer

Along with working on his albums,  Dream went on to write hits for many other R&B, hip-hop, and pop artists. Artists including J. Holiday, Usher, Yung Joc, Usher, Jesse McCarthey, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Brandy, Beyoncé, and more. He has received a total of four Grammys from the songs he’s written.

Even though he hasn’t been at the forefront with his own solo work he’s still releasing music independently.  In more recent news The-Dream has sold 75% of his catalog to an investment firm for $23 Million. This means he gave up his rights for future royalty checks off the songs that were included. Regardless he has more than enough hits and cash to take that gamble, especially if he still has the rights to “Umbrella” and “Single Ladies”.

The-Dream is still writing for some of the biggest names in the game. His sound and swag are still being mimicked by some of these younger artists. So if you’ve forgotten about The-Dream or don’t know who he is, now you know. It’s rumored that he may release a new project before the end of the year so be on the lookout.
