As we continue our conversations we speak to blogger Joy Nibbs. She is a blogger who is all about food. On her blog Spice and Nice, she shares her love of that. With no further ado here’s the conversation with Joy

Who is Joy Nibbs?

Joy Nibbs is a freelance writer with a huge focus on creating a balance between our bodies and the food we put into them. When she isn’t working on assignments you can find her in the kitchen making a new recipe, hanging out with friends, going to church, writing for her blog, or playing games with her husband. Her hobbies are gardening, listening to heavy metal, reading (entirely too much manga), and eating new foods. Her greatest accomplishment is remaining optimistic despite being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

I started writing poetry in my early teens, my dad and I used to have rhyming matches to see who could go the longest with rhyming words. To this day, I have yet to win a match but I still treasure those memories. Since then I kept writing, but I don’t think I ever truly wanted to become a writer, instead, I wanted to be an astronaut, an aeronautical engineer, a neuroscientist, a professor, an author, a poet, a chef, and a botanist. The realization has yet to hit me, but I am sure it will someday.

Where I Find My Inspiration

I love to read and possess a very strange imagination, I use these as my sources for possible blog posts. Sometimes I come across a spice I have never heard of so I try to find new ways to incorporate it into my cooking or just make an entirely new recipe out of it. I love writing about creative minds and the process people take to become who they are. I have never published any of those posts because I want to keep this as my little “me” time.

How I Overcome The Challenges of Blogging

When I started writing I noticed that I had horrible grammar and really small vocabulary to pull from. I started reading more books to see how other authors wrote and how they related their ideas or the feelings of a character to their audience. The funny thing about writing is that you become better at it the more that you do it. My husband has perfect grammar and he knows so many big words a huge part of our relationship revolves around reading and learning new words.

My Tips For New Bloggers

There are so many things I would love to say but I think one of the most important tips is to be confident in what you have to say. It can be nerve-racking to start something new and at first, maybe no one will read your blog or they may even comment and tell you just how bad your writing sucks. Being confident does not mean that you are prideful and arrogant, instead, it means that you are humble enough to know where you need to grow and what you need to do to get there.

Where I See Myself By The End of The Year

My days are filled with uncertainty since I have severe Fibromyalgia, but I try to keep my idea book going and writing down the interesting things I come across for my blog and life story. By taking baby steps I am continuously making progress towards my goals. In the next year, I want to go to a few conferences and maybe do a few collabs with other freelancers either in my area or around the world.

How I Avoid Being Burnt Out

I have experienced burnout and it was really depressing. If I was being very honest, I don’t think you can avoid burn out. It’s kind of like the flu you may get it or you may not regardless of whether or not you get a flu shot. It’s important to take breaks when you need them and to keep your body healthy. Having a routine and working out has helped reduced the number of times I get frustrated and tired. By taking life in strides whether good or bad can help you effectively reduce writers’ block or a burnout.

My Advice to You

Yeah! Please find support. It is imperative for your survival to find a community where you can ask questions, learn new things, and grow as an individual. You can find communities on different platforms like Twitter #bloggerstribe, on Reddit sub/writing, or even Facebook. Whatever you do and whoever you are, remember that you are important, amazing, and loved. If no one tells you that today remember I said it.
