The 00s was a good period musically for me. I was a student in high school during the early 00s and was exposed more than ever before to music thanks to the rise of the internet. Prior to that time I only experienced music through radio and music video countdowns. One of my favorite genres in high school was R&B. Since I was into writing, I was drawn more to that genre because of just that. So this week I will be taking a look at some of my favorite R&B songs from that era. I will also be sharing my Spotify playlist which is always being updated. So let’s get to it.
Omarion – “IceBox”
One of my favorite songs from that period happens to be Omarion’s ‘Icebox‘ single off of his album 21. The song was Omarion’s biggest song of his solo career and landed him in the top 20 of the Billboard 100. It also landed him in the top 20 in the UK as well. I can remember at the time of the release everyone dancing along, like Omarion, to the music video. The song got another boost by Usher in its remix who, at the time, was going through relationship issues himself. Looking back, ‘Icebox’ is probably Omarion’s most known song in his discography to date. His first solo single ‘O‘ would probably be his next biggest song to date.
Usher – “Burn”
In the 2000s Usher fully reached his potential as an artist. With the release of Confessions claimed the crown as a king of R&B. For me, it was the album that made me a true fan. His second single, ‘Burn‘ is probably was my favorite single off the album. The song was written by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Micheal Cox alongside Usher. It was originally the album’s lead single, but ‘Yeah‘ was more appealing because of its crossover ability. My fondest memory from this song is performing the dance routine Usher had during the car scene in History class. I performed it for my weekly current event assignment alongside another classmate to only receive an “F” for the week. The single topped various charts around the world, including the Billboard Hot 100 for eight non-consecutive weeks.
T-Pain – “I’m Sprung”
One of my most talked about songs from that era would be T-Pain’s ‘I’m Sprung.’ It was the first Top 10 single by T-Pain on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #8. This was also the first song that I played in my first car back in 2005. I’m always reflecting back on how it felt to hear it in my 91′ Nissan Maxima in my parent’s driveway. I just love how the bass line felt coming through the Bose system that was in the car. Simply amazing.
Mariah Carey – “We Belong Together”
‘We Belong Together‘ was Mariah Carey’s comeback song. The song helped put her back on the map and on the charts as she spent fourteen non-consecutive weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It was also the first song to simultaneously occupy the top spot on nine Billboard charts. This track was also my class song when I graduated high-school in 2005 which makes it even more special for me.
These are just a few of the R&Bsongs that I love from the 2000s. If you would like to hear more of my favorite songs follow my Spotify playlist which I always update. Check in next week for another set of stories from songs from this era.
