For those who aren’t familiar with August Alsina know that he is one of the most genuine and transparent artists out there. Over his career so far he’s been transparent through his music and interviews about his battles with depression along with thoughts of suicide. So when news broke about speaking out about his relationship with Jada Pinkett-Smith it wasn’t shocking for me.

The Conversation

During his promotional run for his new album, The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy, Alsina revealed more insight on his apparent relationship with Jada with Angela Yee.“I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation, due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership that they’ve spoken on several times, and it, you know, not involving romanticism,” he stated implying that the Smiths had an open marriage.“He gave me his blessing.” he added, “I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really, deeply loved and have a ton of love for her,” referring to Jada.

August went on to state he wanted to clear the air of the situation and to not start any trouble. “What I’m not okay with is my character being in question. I’m not a troublemaker. I don’t like drama.” Okay! Leaving the relationship was the hardest thing I ever had to experience in this lifetime.” However, Alsina added, “I can die right now and be okay knowing that I fully gave myself to somebody … Some people never get that in this lifetime.”

My Takeaway

To start we really can’t bash Jada over this situation until we hear her side. It’s apparent to me that August loves to love and he may have placed himself into this situation. Regardless of Jada’s lifestyle, it’s up to him to go along with it.  Yet, I also do believe she saw an opportunity and took advantage of it. At the beginning of their relationship, August was struggling a lot emotionally and it was apparent to everyone. Jada and her family, I feel, genuinely cared for him and gave him the family support he needed. She was that mother figure he always wanted and ended up abusing that trust. I feel August had to get this off his chest to truly move on. The stress of holding this secret was affecting his health and his focus on his career.

This relationship was just a part of a long line of situations he was dealing with over the last four years. The purpose of this interview was for August to share everything he’s been going through so he can move forward. A lot of people will only come away with the Jada situation, but this interview was more than that. Of course, the situation may have been used to get his name out there, but that’s how the media work.
